Uses of aspirin
Aspirin is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate pain (headache, dysmenorrhoea, myalgia, toothache), treatment of pain and inflammation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and fever reduction. Also, due to its anti-platelet effects, this drug is also used in the initial treatment of cardiovascular disorders (angina pectoris, myocardial infarction).
Mechanism of action of aspirin
This drug inhibits cyclooxygenase enzyme. Platelets are especially sensitive to this effect. Also, its anti-inflammatory effects are exerted by inhibiting the production of antibodies, inhibiting the release of histamine by antigen, and stabilizing capillary permeability during immunological reactions.
Pharmacokinetics of aspirin
Aspirin is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. The drug is bound to plasma proteins by 80-90%. The half-life of the drug is 2-3 hours and it is extensively metabolized in the liver. The drug has the ability to pass through the placenta and milk.
