Rosuvastatin belongs to the class of statin drugs. This drug regulates the amount of cholesterol and other fats made in the body and thus reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Fats are easily stored in body tissues to be used later as a source of energy. Cholesterol is a type of fat (lipid) that is made in the liver from the fats you eat. When the amount of cholesterol in your blood increases, hypercholesterolemia (increased blood fat) occurs. However, high cholesterol may not make you feel sick, but hidden complications are happening.
High cholesterol is deposited in the blood vessels and over time hardens the walls of the vessels and narrows the vessels. This condition reduces blood flow and increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks and strokes.
Rosuvastatin also reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases in people who are prone to cardiovascular diseases (for example, diabetic patients even with normal blood cholesterol).
